St. Clare

Circa 1783-97
Mud plaster
Mission San Xavier del Bac, Tohono O'odham Reservation, Arizona

The statue features the dark mantle, gray habit, and rope cincture of St. Clare's Franciscan order. Franciscan friars have led the mission through most of its history. The crozier refers to Clare's status as abbess. The round face and copper color are characteristic of the Tohono O'odham people.
